Frequently Asked Questions

You can contact us anytime if you have a question about our programs and services. But it might also be a good idea to read below to see if your question has already been asked and answered ...

How do I get a library card?
Residents who reside within the limits of the Township of Russell on a permanent basis or pay property taxes to the Township may obtain a FREE Library Membership Card by filling out a short application form at any branch of the library. For more information on institutional & non-resident cards and card replacement fees, visit the page Get a Library Card »

Is there a charge for a library card?
There is no charge for library cards to Township of Russell residents, taxpayers or institutions. Non-residents, however, must pay an annual fee of $45 (individual or family card) + $2 for each additional card.

What should I do if I lose my card?
Let us know as soon as you can by phone or email and we will put a stop on the card. You can visit any branch to obtain a replacement card. Replacement cards, for all members, are $4 each.
How can I change my personal information (address, phone number, e-mail)?
Keep your account information up-to-date; be sure to notify the Library (by phone, e-mail or in person) as soon as possible if your address, phone number or e-mail have changed.

Can I return my library material to any branch?
Although it is highly preferable that you return borrowed items to their original branch, you may return them to any branch. Book return containers are available at both branches when the library is closed.

Can I extend the loan period?
Borrowers may request an extension of the loan period (ex.: vacation loan) when they borrow an item. Renewals can be made online, by e-mail or in person. Read the Loan Periods & Fees page for more details.

What does the library charge for late returns?
Materials that are returned past the due date are subject to late fees. Charges are accrued only on "open" business days. Read the Loan Periods & Fees page for more details.

Is there a ceiling on accumulated late fees?
There is a maximum of $8 per item and $50 per card (this does not include other fees like interlibrary loans). Patrons with more than $15 in outstanding fees lose their borrowing and renewal privileges until the fees are paid. Patrons may be notified by phone or by e-mail of overdue items. If after several attempts the items are not returned the patron receives an invoice for the replacement of the item(s).

Can I donate books to the library?
The Library accepts book donations from the public. Books must be in good condition, paperback and hardcover. We do not accept manuals, textbooks, computer texts or damaged/moldy materials. The Library reserves the right to add donated books to its collections or to sell them at its used-book sales. The Library also reserves the right to discard any donated material.

Donations can be dropped off at both library branches. If you have a large donation (more than 3 boxes), please call your local branch office (Russell 445.5331 or Embrun 443.3636) before you bring in your books.

How can I find out if an item is in the library?
If you would like to find out if a specific book or DVD is in the library, you can search the online catalogue or call your local branch.

Can I search for books and DVDs online?
Can I sign out library materials online?
No, you cannot sign out books or DVDs online. You must visit one of our two branches to sign out any of the materials in the collection. However, you are able to place holds online, by e-mail, by phone or in person. For more information on placing holds online, visit your library account.

If you'd like to read or sign out e-books or audiobooks online, visit our e-resources section.

Can I place a hold on a library item signed out by another patron?
Yes, you can place holds on items currently loaned out to another patron. You may also reserve items that are currently on order. Place the hold online or ask library staff to do it for you (e-mail, phone or in person). Reserved items are held for one week.

Can I sign out library materials that are not in the library's collection?
For items not located within the Township of Russell Public Library system, our Interlibrary loan staff will try to obtain the material from another library. This process can take from 2-6 weeks (on average) and is provided at no cost to the patron. In some cases a small fee may be involved (the patron will be notified prior to receiving the material). Patrons are notified by phone when the material arrives; items are held for one week. Loan periods will vary depending on the source library. For more information, visit the Cant Find What I Want page.

How can I renew an item?
Requests for renewals can be made online, by e-mail or in person. Since each library branch only has one phone line, renewals by phone are only permitted in exceptional circumstances. Items on the reserve list cannot be renewed. The maximum number of renewals is 2 per item.

Can I renew overdue items?
Yes, you can renew overdue items. However, you will still be responsible for late charges that have accrued from the due date through to the date of renewal. Upon renewal, you will not accrue any additional late fees.

Do you have meeting room facilities available?
